Rescued Egrets and Herons from Torn Down ficus in Balboa Peninsula Point to be Released Wednesday, July 8th at 10 am, in L Street Park
Huntington Beach, Ca - June 30. 2015 - The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, along with the Balboa Peninsula Point neighborhood, will be returning two to three Snowy Egrets and three Black-crowned Night Herons safely back into the wild. Please join us for this celebration of wildlife on Wednesday, July 8th at 10 a.m. at L Street Park - at the corner of L Street and Plaza del Norte.
The L Street Park has been selected as the location for its many mature trees, including several ficus, and it's close proximity to where the nesting birds were living before a demolition bulldozer tore down the decades-old tree, sending many to their deaths.
Ten nestlings were rescued by residents of the neighborhood, along with Newport Beach Animal Control, and then transferred to the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, where they have been recovering for over a month. Two of the nestlings were DOA and three more died shortly after due to their injuries. The Balboa Peninsula Point resident who risked her life to try and stop the demolition, Caroline Vassar, will be given the honor of releasing these magnificent birds back into the wild.
