We’ve all been there, standing at a well-lit counter of an expensive store drooling over the latest, greatest material temptation. Sometimes, we give into the impulse to over spend and hand over the plastic without thinking about the fiscal consequences. The good news is you can consider making small changes that will help put you in a better place financially.
Make more than your minimum credit card payment. If you’re paying the minimum amount monthly, you’re mostly paying off interest and barely scratching the surface of your actual debt. Check your most recent credit card statements to get an estimate of what your monthly interest is, then look at your budget and see where you can cut a few dollars to pay extra each month. Pretty soon, you’ll be seeing a noticeable difference in your debt.
Prioritize debt by highest interest rate. If Capital One is charging you 17% and Chase is charging you 11%, it may be wiser to focus on paying the 17% first. Make sure you make at least your minimum payments for all accounts, but allocate extra money towards the card with the highest interest and the biggest balance first. The sense of freedom you’ll get after seeing all the balances reduced will be uplifting.
Be yourself; share your story with your credit card company. If you are having difficulties meeting your monthly payments, try talking to your credit card company and let them know why. Many companies will be willing to work with you on a payment plan. Just make you are aware of all the contingencies before you agree to a reduced monthly payment.
Try to liquidate your assets. Although we aren’t advocating selling your most prized possessions, it may help to comb through your house and sell things that no longer have value for you. If you’ve outgrown clothes, you can always take them to consignment shops. Perhaps there is old furniture gathering dust in your attic that you could list on the Internet. Be resourceful. One man’s trash is another’s man treasure, after all.
Track your spending. If you know where your money is going and how much that $55 sweater really cost you, three months after interest accrued, you may be wary of handing over the plastic.
These general suggestions are intended to get you inspired. For advice about debt management, please seek the assistance of a qualified financial advisor.
